Rewind: Charlotte Gainsbourg – Terrible Angels

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s second LP, the 2006’s 5:55 had put me off her music so much, it took two more albums for me to get excited in her music, rather than just acting. The roster included the coolest people on the indie scene not just at the time but ever. Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel from Air produced and and played most of the instruments on the album and Jarvis Cocker wrote most of the lyrics. And all that for the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. The album had flopped and I saw it as a failed attempt to launch her onto the cool indie scene. I’m terrible, I know. Now it seems that, I looked the other way for too long, ‘cos I’ve missed out on this gorgeously gritty pop-dance track. Written and produced by Beck, the track compromises the dark innocence of Bat For Lashes and Goldfrapp’s electro stomp. Massive !!!

The Arrivals: Pond – Moth Wings

The Aussie rockers, Pond, are the newest addition to the eclectic Modular family. Sounding like Tame Impala‘s siblings is not a coincidence. The band’s forth album, “Beard Wife Denim”, has been produced by Impala’s main dude, Kevin Parker. The melodic psychedelic rock style of both bands is infused here with ideas taken from Black Sabbath’s “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. I can hear Iommi’s loosely tuned guitar from Looking for today in Pond’s latest single, Moth wings. Stealing great ideas is still better then “borrowing” bad ones.

Check out and download Pond’s previous single and video, Fantastic Explosions of Time.

The Arrivals: Cold War Kids – Minimum Day/Minimum Mistake

Cold War Kids

My Cold War Kids radar must be broken, ‘cos this beauty somehow slipped through without me noticing. Their last year’s album, Mine is yours, was a rehabilitating release after the previous, poor sophomore effort, Loyalty to Loyalty. Their new one-off song  Minimum day brings them back to the brilliance of their debut, the 2006’s Robbers & Cowards. Minimum mistake is a looser and less manic interpretation of Minimum Day. Both can be downloaded for free at band’s official website [click here] . For freeeeeeeeeee !!!!
