Arrivals: Tycho – Montana

Scott Hansen is an American multi-instrumetalist producer, photographer, graphic artist, blogger and a man behind the ambient project called Tycho and one of the best blogs around, the gorgeous ISO50. Unlike Brian Eno’s still soundscapes, Hansen’s vision is a more fluid sound, following the sun during endless sunset. Sound driven with delicate single cell organism like beats. Tycho’s LP number 3 entitled Montana is on the way, out in March via Ghostly Internation (pre-order here). And the title track shows a surprising, but welcome evolution by adding live drums but staying true to the formula. I never thought I would describe Tycho’s intimate music as “epic” or “cinematic”, but Montana  is and totally points out toward previous material’s “cinemacity”. But it’s closer to Sundance, rather than Hollywood, though.

Tycho is a state of mind.

Arrivals: DIANA – Perpetual Surrender + Four Tet Remix

421401_234526056666120_633569994_nChillwave, the “so 2011” internet music genre,  had a very few heroines and divas, apart from Zola Jesus and Sarah P (of Keep Kelly in Athens). Looking back, it seemed like it was a boys game. DIANA adds another female voice to this short list. As they try to sqeeze the last juices out of this shortlived aesthetic this Canadian band goes beyond the obvious sleepy synths laden, 80’s throwback. The roots of this project can also be traced to the mid 90’s heyday of female fronted triphop acts. The woman behind the mic, Carmen Elle, channels both childish squeak and maturity of Alison Goldfrapp at her most mellow, while the boys behind the decks and synths manage produce a surprising mix of warm and vintage sound, with few surprises.

Four Tet’s remixes might be a penny for a bunch these days, but this Afrobeat inspired, loopy rework is exceptionally good. Even for Mr Hebden’s usually high standards. It’s a free download at DIANA’s website. Get it here [Link here]
