Arrivals: Beirut – East Harlem/Goshen/Santa Fe

It’s no news that the Zack Condon led folk band, Beirut, is one of NoSnobsAllowed’s favourite artists. They’ve just announced the release date and the title of their new album. “The Rip Tide” will be released on the 30th of August. (Which really is a pity, because I was hoping this would be the soundtrack of my summer). They have already premiered some of the new material. Two new songs, including the sweet “Santa Fe”, had been presented live during the gig the band played in Norfolk and two have just been released on a limited 7” and digital. “East Harlem”, including a b-side entitled “Goshen”, is available on Itunes since Monday. The new material sounds much lighter and sunnier than their previous output. “Santa Fe” is joyful and danceable as a wedding song. Which is pretty unusual for Beirut who would rather make music for funerals not weddings. “East Harlem” is as light a feather. “Goshen” is a delicate, melancholic ballad but without a hint of heavy sadness heard on “Gulag Orkestar”. It’s not that it’s just a happier version of Beirut. These songs indicate another step forward without betraying its musical roots. It’s a step towards sophistication and maturity. It was their cover of Caetano Veloso’s “O’Leaozinho” premiered last month was a first sign of the new direction. I posted it couple of months back and you can find it here.

Zack Condon

Caetano Veloso

We have visited Brazil few times on our musical travels here on NoSnobsAllowed. This time it’s via New Mexico, where Zack Condon, the band leader of folk band, Beirut, hails from. His Balkan/Mariachi brass mixture suits this sweet tune by Tropicália master, Caetano Veloso, so very well. The cover version of “O Leãozinho”, among other tributes to the Brazilian music and culture, will be available on “Red Hot + Rio 2” compilation released on June 28th. The album is another release by Red Hot Organization, which raises money and awareness for fight against AIDS.

I’m hoping for a new Beirut album to be announced soon. Last time I spoke to Zack, after the Dublin gig last September, he said that it had been recorded and wiold be mastered around Christmas time. Plus Beirut is headlining one of the best festivals in the world, Electric Picnic. And while we are waiting to hear new material from Zack & Co, we have “O Leãozinho”.  And those who haven’t heard of Beirut yet, I recommend to get their hands on band’s debut album “Gulag Orkestar” this instant! It’s one of the best albums of last decade. Fresh, melodic, contagious, complete… I could go on!

And here’s the original for a good measure:

You probably figured it out by now that the song is about lions 🙂
