The Arrivals:The King Khan Experience EP

HE’S BAAAAACK !!!!!! After a long pause Arish Ahman Khan aka King Khan is back and he’s as sweaty, as horny and as charmingly furious as ever. His shouty shamanic rock’n’roll persona has got many faces. And this time he simultaneously shows up in two incarnations: with previous collaborator the turban wearing artiste Mark Sultan aka BBQ as … well … King Khan and BBQ and under the new moniker, As The King Khan Experience. The former brings two grainy acoustic garage tracks and the latter that unique mixture of soul, funk garage and psychedelic rock with some serious nods to Bollywood funk of the 1970’s, a signature sound of King Khan and The Shrines. By the way, I totally recommend their amazing 2008 compilation, “The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines”. The KK Experience EP is available for download for free at Scion A/V (click here). It has some great moments (“I’ve got love”, “Fa fa fa (Love song)”, “Keep it simple stupid”), but the overall feel of  this release seems a bit sketchy and it’s missing the back up from the mighty horn section that would give it a serious kick and which had made Khan & Co. sound so fun and furious in the past. Given that it’s totally free and hoping it is promising something bigger, maybe an album, it would be a sin to complaint. It’s good to have you back, King. We just wanna hear it for the deaf girl again!

Here’s the crazy video for one of the songs, a German cover of the “Hammer I miss you” by the great late, Jay Reatard. Apes a lot…

You can also download the track individually from Soundcloud. Here are the highlights of The Experience.

The Arrivals: Little Boots – Shake

The former You Tube & My Space star, Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots has been on my radar since her breakthrough internet hit “Stuck on repeat”. With a good, but rushed in, debut album “Hands” that broke into UK’s Top 5, Victoria quickly became remixers’ darling, with Fred Falke and Joker among others reworking her tunes. She is now back with a new single called “Shake”, a bit darker and more mature than her previous stuff. Produced by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco, “Shake” is a proper electro pop stomper with chart success written all over it. The yet untitled album is one of the first releases of 2012 that I’m really looking forward to hear. In the meantime “Shake” will get reworks by deep house maestros – Crazy P and the saviours of the dance music in 2011, Azari & III. You can also sink your ears into Little Boots’ brand new mixtape “Shake until your heart breaks”.
